How big is the need for the services you provide? Who do you serve?
Johnson: It’s huge. Blue Kangaroo Packoutz goes in after fires and floods and packs the home’s contents. Once we have everything packed up and in inventory, we move those items to our facility, where we do restoration work on them. Once we have restored the items, we bring them all back to the home. What we do has always been an afterthought, but it’s actually really lucrative because insurance companies are paying an extremely high dollar for content replacement. Now they’re finding out that restoration is much more cost-effective, so they’re hiring companies like us to get a handle on the claim. So the need is growing because it is brand new in the insurance world.
Our job is to educate the homeowners, the TPAs, insurance companies, and adjusters. Typically, we have about eight customers on every job, but the homeowner is our true customer. All of these people have a stake in the game and they want to ensure the homeowner is being dealt with fairly and properly. Our goal is to capture our fair share of the market and raise everyone’s standards as well.

Johnson: There are more competitors popping up, however, there is more misinformation. Currently, there is no systematic approach to anything. So every insurance company will get the same estimates for a fair price, as well as the same service. We want our business model to be high-quality and systematic, which will bring structure to the industry.
What are you most proud of?
Johnson: Helping people put their lives back together one item at a time. I really enjoy the expressions on their faces when we bring back something special, like an antique or a family heirloom, they thought they would never see again. We do full restoration, not just packing and cleaning, including furniture refinishing, reupholstery and art restoration.
What kind of entrepreneur are you trying to recruit?
Johnson: We’re looking for those who have a want and need to work in the insurance business because it’s a different business altogether. Someone who’s mechanically inclined and understands how things are put together and cleaned, and with training can be even better. We’re also looking for someone ready to make a commitment because Blue Kangaroo Packoutz is ready to make a commitment for you. I believe it’s a two-way street, so for the entrepreneur who wants to be part of this, they have to want it as much as we want it.
